Children are welcome at Atlanta Dermatology & Laser Surgery, and our staff is experienced in treating dermatology concerns in children of all ages. In order to make their visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible, children are invited to use the books and toys available for them in our waiting room.

Atopic Dermatitis, or Eczema, is a chronic skin disorder that affects 15-20% of children in the U.S. It causes inflamed, itchy rashes that can range from minor to severe and can show up on any part of the body. The rashes can lead to infection and are sometimes associated with asthma and food allergies. Eczema is not contagious and often improves with age. 

Brown birthmarks are, as the name implies, marks on the skin that are present at birth. They are generally harmless, although large birthmarks (larger than the size of a fist) are more likely to become cancerous. Any birthmarks that appear to change in color or appearance should be checked by a doctor. Birthmarks may harm self-esteem, depending on their size and location.

These are vascular birthmarks, meaning that they consist of blood vessels close to the skin’s surface. They may appear several weeks after birth and can have a spongy appearance (also known as strawberry marks).

They are pink, red, blue, or purple in color and raised above the skin. They are most often found on the head, neck or limbs. Some shrink away on their own (Rapidly Involuting), while others continue to grow as the child grows (Noninvoluting).

These vascular birthmarks are flat and consist of dilated blood capillaries. They sometimes harbor underlying tissue abnormalities, so they should always be examined by a Board Certified Dermatologist. These enlarge over time and respond most effectively to laser treatments.

One of our dermatology experts will examine the birthmark and determine if treatment is necessary. . A biopsy on brown congenital nevi may be necessary, to rule out skin cancer.
